Ethical Guidelines

The Ethics Office has produced publications that describe the standards for ethical conduct established by our Ethics Code.  There is a separate publication for each group covered under the Code of Ethics:  elected officials, employees, board and commission members, neighborhood planning unit officers, and prohibited sources.  Prohibited sources include city contractors, vendors, and customers.  Each group's publication describes the ethical standards and provides examples to illustrate how the standard applies.

Ethics Advisories

The Board of Ethics has adopted ethics advisories that compile all of the rules related to a specific ethics  topic in one document.  The advisories are intended to help persons affected by the code to understand the rules that apply to them.  The Ethics Advisory on the Post-Employment is given to employees when they leave city employment.  The Ethics Advisory on Use of City Property during Political Campaigns is distributed to candidates for municipal office and for employee pension boards during campaign years. The Ethics Advisory on the Holiday Gift Rule allows officials and employees to accept a gift on behalf of the city from a prohibited source such as a city contractor, vendor, or customer on special occasions when the gift is perishable, impractical to return, and shared with the public or within the office.
